Built Up In Layers
I work in acrylic, and sometimes in mixed media. A painting gets worked over and over until it feels finished, which is usually later than I expect it to. Irises, peonies, water lilies, succulents, grapevines. Occasionally a landscape, occasionally something with no subject at all. Every one of them is an original on canvas, and there is only ever one.

Sally Hazlett | Artist
I am Sally Hazlett. I paint in Austin, Texas, mostly flowers and gardens, in acrylic and mixed media on canvas. I am self-taught, I have been painting for about five years, and I sell the originals. I came to it late and by accident. When my husband was diagnosed with cancer and I became his primary caregiver, I needed something that belonged to me, something I could do with my hands while the rest of life was out of my control. So I started painting. It gave me somewhere to go on the hard days, and it has stayed with me ever since.
Most of what I paint comes out of imagination or memory rather than from a photograph. I am not trying to reproduce a flower. I am after the way one color feels when I put it next to another, which is why my irises come out blue and my succulents sit on a green you would never find in a garden.I am grateful for being old. It is a luxury denied to many, and these paintings are the visual celebration of a life I have been glad to have. I paint every day because it makes me happy, and I would like the work to carry some of that to whoever ends up living with it.
